Trout Fishing Gear

Embarking on a stillwater trout fishing trip requires a tailored approach. Equip yourself with a sensitive fly rod, ideally 9 to 10 feet in length, matched with a lightweight fly reel for smooth casting and retrieval. Floating or intermediate fly lines are a good choice to navigate varying depths effectively. Stock your fly box with an array of flies including nymphs, streamers, and dry flies to entice trout based on the season. Pay close attention to the water's surface, observing for any signs of activity or hatches. Patience is paramount; utilise slow retrieves and subtle presentations to allure wary trout. There's plenty more advice over on our YouTube channel and on our trout fishing blog category.

Watch our video with double world fly fishing champion, Howard Croston, at Thrunton Long Crag Trout Fishery in Northumberland as he shares some of his top tips for early season stillwater fishing.
