The History Of Royal Wulff

Posted in: Our Brands

Royal Wulff Products was started by Lee & Joan Wulff nearly 40 years ago. Lee Wulff was a founding father of modern fly fishing, and is responsible for many of the innovative ideas in product design, fly design, and fishing ethics. Lee invented the first fly fishing vest years ago, and sewed it by hand. He designed the world-famous Royal Wulff fly (and countless others!) Lee pioneered the catch-and-release ethic that is embraced universally today. His spirit of adventure and creative design lives on today.

Joan Wulff is first and foremost the preeminent female fly fisher, casting instructor, author, angler, and fly fishing personality. Famous for her revolutionary fly casting methodology, she has authored many articles and books on the subject, and continues to operate the Wulff School of Fly Fishing in the historic Beaverkill River Valley in the Catskill Region of New York State.

Lee Wulff was responsible for popularizing fly fishing to the television audience in the early days of American Sportsman. He was also a mechanical engineer, a tireless inventor (the fishing vest), author, illustrator, teacher, explorer and advocate of catch-and-release fishing. His spirit lives on through the strong preservation ethic that infuses the sport of fly fishing today; an ethic that he championed throughout his lifetime.

Joan Wulff started in casting competitions when just a schoolgirl, then progressed to champion, author, instructor and spokesman, and today remains the leading female fly fisherman in the world. Her teaching methodology is simple, straightforward and, extremely effective. Her many books and DVDs continue to help millions of fishers around the globe.

A really heart felt and amazing story that anyone who has ever touched a fishing rod in their lives should know. I have been an avid angler and more recently, an avid fly fisherman for the entire duration of my life. Yes, i was born with a fishing rod in hand and it seems from the story of Lee and Joan Wulff, ours stories are somewhat similar. A deep rooted passion for the outdoors and preservation of our resources. I just want to say thank you to both Lee and Joan for all the innovation in the world of fishing, fly fishing and teaching the art to our new generations so as to keep the spirit and story alive and well. I am and always will be grateful and inspired to follow in the footsteps that were laid out with such passion and commitment to this sport.
