Up until now Mayfly nymphs have been tied on longshank hooks, as successful as these have been, they lack the mobility of the real thing, The ?Wiggle Nymph? of the 70?s - a US idea ? back then, caught my attention, and has led me on a quest, experimenting with the idea on this long bodied copy of the natural. The term ?wiggle? convinced many a fly tier that the so constructed nymph would behave like a mini pike plug ? it doesn?t. But what it does quite effectively is move its abdomen at the whim of the current. Also, and just as important, when a trout strikes it doesn?t hit a long stiff object, this pattern collapses making it a far better hooker. I have also incorporated several other ?triggers? found on the natural:- the obvious soft dorsal gills, the ?danica? markings and three pairs of legs, soft enough to sit underneath when the artificial is ?worked?.
