Sportfish Tuition Update
Our 2020 programme of courses and tuition is currently on hold, but we do hope to be able to resume safely soon, and are already busy planning for 2021.
Our bestselling courses are very popular indeed, and do sell out quickly, so if you would like to get ahead of the crowd for next year and receive advance notice of dates, simply email: [email protected] with your name and telephone number, stating which course(s) you are interested in.
We will then be in touch via email, prior to advertising the course, with dates for your consideration before they go live.
Many consider sea trout fishing to be a mysterious and exclusive branch of our sport but this course demonstrates that this is absolutely NOT the case!
Hosted by Nick Clewlow and two highly experienced guides, you will be taught all there is to know about sea trout fishing and hopefully land a few fish along the way.
We have once again teamed up with the famous Abercothi Fishery in Carmarthenshire for our 2020 courses as the beats continue to offer exciting sea trout fishing in marvellous surroundings.
Now in our sixth year at the venue, Abercothi continues to produce the goods fish-wise with a 9lb sea trout our best in recent seasons, we catch plenty of good salmon when the conditions are right too.
The Abercothi Fishery comprises approximately three miles of the River Towy and a further mile of the River Cothi, with almost all the fishing double bank.
There are forty main named pools, including the renowned Junction Pool, on what is widely regarded as the prime stretch of sea trout fishing in the country. There are three daily rotating beats: Llwchgwyn, Abercothi and Junction.
Access and parking is excellent with a gravelled road alongside, or adjacent to, the entire fishery. Any walking is over bankside pasture, and although wading is often required it is mostly on gravel and easy going with few, if any, obstructions to casting.
The course covers all aspects of sea trout fishing including river craft and daytime reconnaissance. We take you through the essential tactics to use, covering all aspects from surface lure fishing to sunk line work and retrieve rates. We also look at balanced outfits and correct tackle selection.
As with all our courses we try to instruct in an informal and relaxed way, usually one-to-one as you are fishing, presenting ideas and options allowing you to maximise the water in front of you. You will then have time alone to practice and hone your skills for future trips.
Don’t worry if you have never tried sea trout fishing before, this is the perfect opportunity to start and it offers great sport for beginners and experienced anglers alike.
The guides are excellent and will help you with all your night fishing ‘know how’ covering aspects such as how to cast and judge distance; the use of lights on and around the water; sea trout behaviour and how to exploit it and daytime tactics, including spinning in high water should it be necessary. It’s easy wading and sea trout aren’t as shy and spooky as many people make out!
In addition to the sea trout fishing there will also be the opportunity, should conditions allow, to have a fish for salmon during the day if you wish and casting instruction and pointers can also be provided for this.
Accommodation is provided and we will be staying at the well-equipped Abercothi Farm. This delightful 18th Century farmhouse could not be better situated, being on the banks of the river with good access to all beats and the whole courtyard and house have recently been renovated to the highest standards throughout.

"Thank you, once again, for an awesome fishing trip. My intention in booking the course was to learn techniques on how to approach catching sea trout and maybe if I was really lucky, catch a small one, but to land 6 sea trout and 2 Brownies was insane.
The ghillies‘ expertise and depth of knowledge of the water ensured I was fishing the ever changing conditions to the maximum extent. Casting at night is a surreal experience and is not something easily learned but ghillies Antony and Andy guiding me step–by–step as I found rod loading, judging distance and generally presenting flies correctly, in often pitch blackness with more and more confidence.
I learnt in the short space of three nights what would have taken half a lifetime on my own and what can I say about course leader, the transcendent Nick Clewlow…His natural exuberance is infectious and inspiring, any course he is leading should be attended without question. Nothing is too much trouble for Nick whether your fishing, dining, drinking or just chilling, listening to his life experiences about his fishing exploits are worth attending the course alone.
Chris, well done for arranging such an insanely special course that I feel privileged to have attended."
"After chatting to the guys at Sportfish I decided that the hosted River Towy trip would be the best introduction to sea trout fishing. After a wonderful three days I must thank Tom (Sportfish) & Jamie (ghillie) for their energy, enthusiasm and commitment to making the course a success”
