WELCOME TO THE 2023/2024 EDITION OF THE SPORTFISH CATALOGUE
You may remember the Sportfish mission from our previous catalogue. Part of it is about striving to give you an amazing customer experience, plus friendly advice & tuition for every level of angler.
Another part of it is about offering the ultimate range of quality game fishing products to suit every budget. A ridiculous amount of time and testing dictates which products make it into this catalogue, and which don’t. We’re obsessives, fanatics, gear junkies. It’s not all about the best of the best though.
This catalogue is a book of dreams for every fly fisher. We sell fly fishing rods for under £80 and for over £1,000. The 8,000+ products in this catalogue are there because they’re the best quality for the price. We’ve done the hard work (and the late nights) to make your choices a little easier, so you can shop with confidence, knowing that quality is guaranteed, whatever your budget. Perhaps more important now than it’s ever been.
Even in uncertain, challenging times anglers generally remain an optimistic, even philosophical bunch. Fishing author John Gierach summed it up nicely when he wrote “they say you forget your troubles on a trout stream, but that’s not quite it. What happens is that you begin to see where your troubles fit into the grand scheme of things, and suddenly they’re just not such a big deal anymore.” It’s one of the myriad reasons we continue to fish, and it was a pretty mixed season for many of us last year. We hope your season is treating you much better so far this year!
As always we have lots of new products for you, some of which are highlighted here. New fly rods include the outstanding extension to the award-winning Sage R8 fly rod family the Sage Salt R8 (p12), the 2nd generation Mackenzie FX2 range (p24) and the Guideline NT11 family (p28). There are some superb new saltwater reel families with the Sage Enforcer (p38) and the Lamson Centerfire (p41), plus a revolutionary Simms G4 Pro Powerlock wading boot with its interchangeable cleats (p112). The women’s wading collection from Simms includes two new waders and a wading jacket (p115). You can build your own C&F fly boxes to your choice of size, colour and format (p95) and we’ve got a completely new range of great value polarised sunglasses from UK brand Fortis Eyewear (p178). Loon’s innovative new tools and accessories include pliers (p153), amadou (p154) and a fly tying mat you can’t do without (p184). And don’t miss double World Champion Howard Croston’s Drop Back Bung system and flies (p85).

The pandemic has altered all perception of time and it seems like a very long while ago since we published our spring/summer catalogue. Despite the challenges, we hope you made a good start to your season and will continue to fish throughout the colder months too. It can be challenging but with the correct clothing and gear, and an eye to target the right species at the right time, it is hugely rewarding. We have been busy since the last catalogue. For online shoppers we launched a new website employing state-of-the-art technology and innovative design, it‘s easy to navigate and offers safe, secure shopping.

Similarly, we have continued to support the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS) and offer line recycling facilities in our stores. As a company we believe we should achieve the highest standards of environmental practice and support all appropriate initiatives to further this.
We have also partnered with Charles Jardine's Castaway initiative, which supports those affected by cancer and helps improve their physical and mental health through fishing. The Sportfish Game Fishing Centre (Pages 4 & 5) was the location for their inaugural event.
We have also been busy sourcing the very best game fishing kit and have a plethora of new product to share with you, including: new families of Simms and Patagonia luggage (Page 176 and 181). A new range of Ultralite® rods from Hardy (Page 17) and award-winning reels from Greys (Page 58). The new Vision Stillmaniac cassette reel (page 56) will find favour amongst our reservoir anglers and the new Shakespeare Oracle 2 rods (Page 29) offer beginners incredible quality and value for money.

The 8,000+ products in this catalogue are there because they’re the best quality for the price. We like to think of this catalogue as a book of dreams for every fly fisher, carefully curated to make your choices a little easier, so you can shop with confidence, knowing that quality is guaranteed, whatever your budget.
Last year we made a tough decision not to produce an Autumn/Winter edition of the Sportfish catalogue, due to changing customer habits, increased printing and postage costs, plus being mindful of our environmental impact. However, our catalogue will always remain a fundamental part of our business, and now that we’ll only produce it annually we’ve decided to make it even bigger and better. We’ve added new content from the pros to help you learn and improve, with top tips for better casting from our own AAPGAI Master instructor Robin Elwes on page 73, how to read the water by double World Fly Fishing Champion Howard Croston on page 155, and tips for improving your catch rate from Welsh international Shaun Watkins and Trout & Salmon editor Andrew Flitcroft on page 97. We’ve also added a page to celebrate our customers’ fish of the year on page 128 and something on the environmental charities we actively support that are so important to protecting the sport we all love on page 168.
As always, our team has been working hard to bring you the latest fly fishing tackle and gear, some of which we’ve highlighted here. We’re excited to introduce Sage’s revolutionary SPEY R8 rods (p.8) and SPEY II reels, as well as Hardy’s awardwinning Marksman rods (p.13) and Sovereign Reels (p.36). Our catalogue is printed using FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper and mailed out in a recyclable FSC® certified wrap. Sportfish is a Planet Mark Certified Business, meaning we are committed to reducing our carbon emissions by 5% annually. In fact, in 2022/23 we reduced our carbon footprint by 7.6% and this year we’re aiming for even more.
