I have had and used the Marco Polo fly-tying system for 18 months now and can highly recommend it. The tools and vice are superb quality – for example the scissors are by Renomed. It's small and portable so great for the mobile tier. The hackle pliers, dubbing needle, whip finish tool, and bobbin holder are some of the best and I keep reaching out to use them.
There is one thing you need to be aware of:
The box is not big enough for the usual tying silk spools (UNI, UTC, Semperfli). What you have is their micro spool for holding silk – they recommend you wind on with an electric drill. For me, this is a hassle, so when I get materials to tie with I also get the silk needed.
There are a number of minor stuff I would like to point out:
The dubbing needle also has a dubbing brush in middle, which brushed your fingers and makes them a little bendy.
The bobbin holder must be loaded with a threader as the opening is a foam slit – there’s a greater theader included.
The vice, on its stand, is a little low, so I put it on the box and some books to get to the right height.
The jaws are small so only tested for trout flies and lures, not sure how well it copes with salt and pike hooks.
There is a space for some tweezers but none are supplied.
Some tools are over-designed – one tool has three sizes for half hitches and the hair-stacker has also three sizes (all medium to small).
Overall, thoroughly recommended and 5 stars…
