Inside Scientific Anglers: The Evolution & Thinking Behind the Fly Line

Inside Scientific Anglers: The Thinking Behind the Fly Line

Scientific Anglers has never been just another fly line manufacturer. It’s a brand built on problem-solving, experimentation and real science - the kind that starts in the lab and proves itself on the water. From core materials and coatings to taper profiles and shootability, every detail is engineered with purpose. In this article, we look inside the thinking behind the fly line: where the ideas come from, how they’re tested, and why that approach continues to shape modern fly fishing performance.

The History Of Scientific Anglers

Scientific Anglers was founded 80 years ago in Michigan, America by 3 friends and fly fishers: Leon Martuch, Clare Harris and Paul Rottiers. They understood that the fly rod cast, the rods, the reels, and the flies all connect through the cotter pin of fly fishing: the fly line. They shared a vision to revolutionise fly lines through innovation and the new production techniques that were becoming more widely available with industrialisation.

Throughout their history they have been responsible for some of the most groundbreaking fly line developments. In 1959 they introduced Air Cel, widely considered the first modern floating fly line, replacing the old greased silk lines anglers were using which were high maintenance and less durable. They followed it up a year later with Wet Cel, the first modern sinking one. They constantly adapted tapers and materials to improve performance, introducing the first shooting lines in 1966.

In 1980 they pioneered the use of powdered tungsten in their sinking fly lines, making them sink faster than lead based lines (as well as being safer for the environment). In 1988 they introduced silicone as a slickness agent in fly lines, a technology that was soon copied throughout the industry and is still used today. In 2001 XTS gel-spun backing is introduced and provides up to 75 percent more reel capacity than standard material and is stronger than steel in equal diameters.

Advancements in fly-line development led to the first-ever textured fly line, the Sharkskin, which hit the market in 2007 to widespread acclaim. By embossing a diamond-shaped pattern on the length of each line, Scientific Anglers vastly reduced friction, leading to lines that floated higher, shot farther, and lasted longer than any previous line ever produced.

The most technologically advanced line ever produced, the SharkWave, debuts in March of 2014. Taking the texturing process to the next level, Scientific Anglers creates the world’s first triple-textured and triple-coloured fly line. The tip section of each line features the diamond-shaped Sharkskin embossing; the heads and running lines are embossed with the golf-ball dimpled Mastery Texture; and a smooth section, known as the Tactile Reference Point, sits where the head meets the running line.

They also led the way in packaging sustainability, in 2019 introducing paper-based leader packaging which is 100% recyclable. In fact all materials, ink, and window are fully biodegradable to protect our streams and reduce our environmental footprint, winning them the Fly Fisherman Green Award in 2020. They followed this up in 2021 by introducing recyclable paperboard fly line spools, significantly reducing waste from the previously used plastic spools.

And along the way they’ve also applied their science and expertise to introduce fly fishing products beyond fly lines. In 1969 they produced the first balanced fly rod, fly reel, and line system, a year which also marks the introduction of System reels that went on to become among the most popular reels in fly-fishing history. 2019 saw them introduce Absolute Leader and Tippet, with 29% higher wet knot strength compared to our previous material and up to 40% higher wet knot strength when compared to our competitors. Absolute Fluorocarbon leaders boast a 15% higher wet knot strength compared to our previous material and features incredible clarity and abrasion resistance.

Their historical development timeline speaks for itself – not many fly fishing brands have made more of an impact than Scientific Anglers!

Since the 3 founders who wanted to change the world of fly fishing in 1945, the company has expanded its merchandise, but remains dedicated to selling fly lines.

Scientific Anglers President Brad Befus said the company is fortunate to be based in Midland:

“Other than not having salt water at our disposal, to be able to field-test product like, literally, our backyard here in Michigan offers a great testing ground for us as we develop product because of the diversity of the fisheries, diversity of the weather that we have. We don't take it lightly. It's been really good from a product development standpoint, because we can build prototypes and we can put them on the water, and a lot of different situations, right here, which I think is kind of unique when I look at the competitive landscape.”

Brad (pitcured here) goes on to sum up Scientific Anglers pretty well here:

“From inventing the contemporary floating fly line more than 50 years ago to our specialty core construction and patented AST and texturing technologies we continue to transform and modernize the sport. Our angling scientists and design team work in partnership with fly-fishing experts to develop cutting-edge technologies and ultimate fly line designs to boost your fly-fishing experience to the extreme.

One of our core missions is the development of products that help solve problems for anglers - improving their overall experience on the water. Whether you are just beginning or an experienced angler our equipment is designed to give the optimum performance with every cast!”

When the word “scientific” is in your name, it only stands to reason that innovation becomes engrained in your DNA.
