Steve Hunt spends a day trout fishing with a Hardy Zenith Sintrix 9′ #5 matched with Waterworks ULA Force 2X SL fly reel.

If Carlsberg made fly rods and reels they would have just copied the HARDY SINTRIX  ZENITH FLY ROD AND THE LAMSON ULA FORCE SL REEL.

Probably the finest combination money can buy, a true marriage made in heaven.

All these superlatives describe the rod and reel combination I used recently at our local trout fishery Delbury Hall in Shropshire.

Right from the start whilst tackling up, the rod felt very well balanced a well shaped cork handle that felt snug in the hand this was complimented with a very impressively designed two part skeletal reel seat ,this gave the rod a very modern look, and certainly stands out from the crowd.

The unbelievably thin diameter light sage coloured green blank is trimmed with dark green whippings and is furnished with top of the line single leg titanium guides from REC and Fuji

The rod exudes quality!

A recent visit to Delbury Hall Trout Fishery gave me the perfect opportunity to fish with my favourite small stillwater trout rod – the Sage One 9ft 6wt 4pce.

The trout were playing hard to get and with a fairly strong side wind blowing, I needed every bit of performance that this rod could give me. I shouldn’t have worried though as the rod is easily capable of casting the tightest of loops. I also love the sense of feel the rod gives both when casting and playing fish. It allowed me to deliver the fly accurately and delicately to exactly where I wanted it to go. During the day I used a  variety of fly patterns of various weights and sizes, the Sage cast all of them with ease.

To complete the outfit I chose a Rio Gold WF 6 floating flyline. In my opinion this is the ultimate rod/line combination for this kind of fishing and compliments the rods performance to perfection.

When it comes to choosing a Salmon rod I am in an enviable position as I have access to the worlds finest fly rods, having said that, this makes the choice even more difficult!

I fish for the elusive silver tourist on the River Wye on a weekly basis. The Wye is not a big river, with the exception of a few beats, so I wanted a smaller rod but with the capability of casting a reasonably large tube fly if needed.

When choosing a rod my criteria are simple. I wanted something that I could cast with ease and with the minimum of effort. I am no casting instructor, or casting guru, I am a fisherman. Sounds simple, but I had been searching for a while!!

Until……. the day Lief Stavmo, Guideline’s rod designer, introduced the Guideline Reaction series.

The first time I picked up the Guideline Reaction 13ft 7in # 9/10 it was a wow !!! The balance was perfect and the rod was very light in the hand. You could feel how the best American and Japanese graphite cloths, together with the most advanced guides and reel seat components, achieve this balance and lightness.
