“Greys of Alnwick” was founded by passionate angler Malcolm Grey in 1968, shortly after he left the House of Hardy, also based in Alnwick, Northumberland. The company quickly forged a strong reputation with anglers by launching a range of high performance mid-market fly rods including the iconic ‘Kielder’ fly rod series.
Greys Fishing Tackle Range Expands
Fly line, fly reels and fishing clothing soon followed as well as market expansion into carp and sea fishing with the ‘Power Play’ carp rods and ‘Hi-Power’ sea rods. These developments broadened angler awareness and established Greys as one of the most popular and respected fishing tackle brands in the UK.
The House of Hardy acquired Greys of Alnwick in 1999 after identifying a strategic opportunity to compete in complementary areas of the tackle market. The Greys GRX fly rod was one of the first designs under new ownership and quickly became the best-selling new fly rod in the UK.
Throughout this period the Greys brand continued to succeed with its reputation for innovation, quality, reliability and value. Many of the Greys products such as the GRXi, Prodigy and Apollo remain popular with anglers today.
House of Hardy Recognises Greys Brand Values
The significance and value of the Greys brand to anglers and to the House of Hardy was recognised in 2003 when the House of Hardy was renamed Hardy & Greys Ltd.
Technology remains critical to the Greys brand and in 2012, the launch of the TOREON® ‘nano’ particle carp rods solidified its reputation of applying innovation to create a performance advanced for the angler.
Greys Becomes Part of Pure Fishing
In 2013 Greys became part of the Pure Fishing family, invigorating a focus on global market presence and maximising the technical expertise for which the Greys brand is known. Today Greys focuses on fly fishing, combining European heritage with innovation to create high-end but affordable gear for the modern fly angler with a spirit for adventure.
Greys tackle now covers pretty much everything - fly lines, leaders & tippets, nets, fly boxes, fishing waders, accessories and of course a complete range of performance clothing and cutting edge fly rods and reels.
