We spoke to Roddy Hall and Jonathon Muir from Farlows Travel to see what they’ll be bringing along to the 2018 Sportfish Reading Show.
What will you be bringing along to the Sportfish Reading Show this year?
Roddy Hall: This will be our second visit to the Sportfish Reading Show and we’ll be there to share our huge range of fly fishing destinations with visitors during the show weekend. We’ll be giving out our latest brochure, which is full of dream fishing destinations all around the world, including lodges in Russia, Iceland, Argentina, Chile, the Seychelles, Zambia and many, many more. In addition to some of our more far-flung and exotic trips, we’ll also be teaming up with our friends from Fishing Breaks to offer chalkstream days on rivers such as the Test, Itchen, Dun, Kennet and Lambourne, taking bookings over the course of the show.
Are there any particular destinations you’re excited to share with us?
Jonathon Muir: We’re currently focussed on expanding our portfolio of trout fishing lodges and we think these will be of great interest to those attending the Sportfish Reading Show. As well as the trout lodges that our clients currently visit in South America, New Zealand and Russia, Roddy and I will be travelling to various other locations around Europe this season, scouting out some great trout fishing closer to home. We’ll be visiting Italy, Spain, Slovenia and the Bavarian Alps to start planning trips with clients, so if trout fishing is your passion, come and talk to us! We’re working with an award-winning trout fishing destination in the Spanish Pyrenees that offers visitors the chance to add the rare zebra trout to their list of species.
Do you have a favourite fly fishing destination?
Roddy: The Rio Grande in Argentina has to be up there among my top fishing destinations. I recently travelled there with a group of clients and we landed great numbers of quality sea trout, catching fish weighing twelve to fifteen pounds every single day, with two twenty-pounders recorded for the week. There’s simply nowhere else like it for world-class sea trout. I also really enjoy fishing for tigerfish in Africa and I’ll be hosting a trip to the Zambezi with a group of clients later this year. Catching these magnificent fish while elephants bathe in the river next to you and lions look on from the riverbank is an experience like no other.
Jonathon: Atlantic salmon are my passion and I’ll be travelling to the Atlantic Salmon Reserve in Russia this July to host a group of clients fishing the Kharlovka. It will be my first time visiting the Kola Peninsula and I’m sure the Kharlovka will become an instant favourite! I started salmon fishing in Scotland, it remains close to my heart and I very much enjoy helping clients arrange salmon fishing days on Scottish rivers, as well as bigger adventures further afield.
What else are you looking forward to seeing or doing at the Sportfish show?
Roddy: I’m looking forward to catching up with the many travelling anglers I have made friends with in over twenty years in the business who will no doubt be attending during the weekend. The Sportfish Reading Show is a great meeting point for anglers and a chance to connect with old friends.
Jonathon: The Sportfish team has organised a fantastic schedule of talks and demonstrations, which I’m really looking forward to seeing. I’m especially keen to catch Patagonia’s ‘Una’ film screening in the lecture theatre.
