Sportfish Game Fishing Centre

It’s all change at Sportfish Reading as one of the biggest and best game fishing stores in the UK just got a whole lot better, the Sportfish fly fishing team are here to tell you why…

Set amidst 45 acres of delightful Berkshire countryside the Sportfish Game Fishing Centre has always been a centre of excellence for game fishing, offering an unrivalled package of tuition and expertise, together with one of the most comprehensive displays of game fishing tackle and accessories in the on-site retail store. But now the management of the on-site lakes has transferred to Sportfish too and we are at last able to offer a whole new angling experience!

Haywards Farm Lake

Haywards Farm Lake first opened in March 2000 and management transferred to the Sportfish team in May 2016, whereupon we took on the ambitious brief to create one of the finest small, stillwater trout fisheries in the country.

The canvas for the creation is the 11-acre Haywards Farm Lake, a spring-fed, crystal clear water boasting abundant wildlife and insect life and featuring landscaping that affords both excellent access and unimpeded casting. Not by any means a featureless ‘bowl’ Haywards Farm Lake has character in the form of bays, reed-fringed margins and promontories and the depths vary from 3 to 15ft offering a range of fishing opportunities.

Fish stock

The regular stocking is now a mix of high quality, hard-fighting, full-finned rainbows with a high proportion of superb brown trout, together with a few blue trout to add a little extra interest. The fish currently average over 3lb in weight with plenty in the 5 to 8lb bracket and the occasional specimen that will really test your tackle.

Facilities and projects

There is ample free parking and the on-site lodge offers a lounge with a small kitchen area, hot drinks facilities and male, female and disabled toilets.

Our ongoing projects include:

  • Increasing the number of casting platforms around the lake
  • Making boat fishing available for the first time
  • Introducing more specimen fish
  • Installing floating islands and aeration
  • Refurbishing the lodge and picnic areas

Lake Savage

In conjunction with our partners at Savage Gear we are developing the 5-acre Lake Savage to offer something a little bit different when it opens later this year.

Like its larger sister, Lake Savage is also a beautifully landscaped, spring-fed water with crystal clear clarity and depths from 3 to 15ft but it is a little more on the ‘wild side’ in terms of the fishing it offers.

To cater for those dog days when the trout really are hard work we offer you the opportunity to tackle up for some of the hottest fly fishing in the UK with the chance to try for a carp on the fly!

Lake Savage
Expect to hook some awesome pike on Lake Savage

Or if predators are more your thing, and you fancy battling it out with pike and perch on flies, lures and artificials, we have that covered too as the lake holds pike to over 25lb and perch to over 4lb, which will give small baitcasting outfits a serious test.

Oh yes, there are a few big trout lurking in there too, so you can never be quite sure what you are going to hook, isn’t that part of the fun of fishing?
